In 1838, a local post office was named Woodlawn, but the name of the town was changed to Mount Holly in 1875 after the Mount Holly Cotton Mill that opened the same year. A.P. and D.E. Rhyne and Ambrose Costner originally owned the mill, which was the fourth mill to be built in the county and the oldest surviving mill today. As with many Southern towns, Mount Holly saw major growth due to the introduction of the railroad. The Carolina Central Railway began servicing Mount Holly in 1860, and the Piedmont and Northern Railway began running from Charlotte to Mount Holly in 1911.
